Waipara Springs Wines
Waipara Springs is located in the warm dry Waipara district north of Christchurch. The wines have been enjoyed both in New Zealand and internationally since the winery opened in 1990.
The vineyard
The Waipara Springs vineyard contains some of the oldest Mendoza clone Chardonnay in New Zealand, a mixture of Pinot Noir clones, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The soil type at Waipara Springs is ideally suited to quality grape production having very high levels of limestone, which results in high soil pH. With vines sheltered from the prevailing easterly winds by the Teviotdale range, high midsummer heat combined with relatively low rainfall during the growing season along with long warm days and cold nights during harvest provide near perfect conditions for high quality fruit.
The first Chardonnay vines were planted by Bruce Moore in 1982, who is a pioneer of viticulture in the Waipara region. Waipara Springs puts a strong emphasis on careful vineyard management with a small team of experienced workers carefully tending the vines throughout all stages of growth delivering fruit of quality for our wine styles.
The winery (Southern Boundary Wines)
Waipara Springs is dedicated to quality and because all the grapes are grown on the property, there is careful quality control from the vine to the bottle.
All the wines are crafted from estate grown fruit from some of the oldest vines in the Waipara Valley. Wherever you find our wines you can be sure that each reflects our dedication to producing high quality wines and is a taste of New Zealand.
New French oak barriques are purchased each year and the winery upgrades its equipment regularly along with additional equipment to cater for increased production from the younger vineyards. The winery has been rewarded with Trophies, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in both National and International wine competitions.
Wine styles
The Waipara Springs range of wines is made in the classic fruit driven style that New Zealand wine is renowned for worldwide. With an emphasis of fruit characters these wines are a vibrant expression of our vineyard.
The Premo Reserve range represents our vision of creating wines with distinct personalities, wines that are a direct expression of our unique terroir. Premo wines communicate a new expression of our vineyard, an evolution of style.
