100% French Oak (35% new)
Twenty nine-year old un-grafted Mendoza clone Chardonnay vines have produced a wine of intensely concentrated flavours and aromas. Un-fined juice with full solids underwent a 'wild fermentation' in French oak barriques to create a wine of structure and complexity.
This wine has been crafted from ungrafted 30 year old Mendoza vines grown on clay and limestone rich soils. It shows complex aromas of lemon, grapefruit, hazelnuts and freshly baked bread in the glass together with rich aromas of French oak. The palate is rich and beautifully balanced and lingers with flavours of homemade marmalade, orange peel, nuts and vanilla. This wine will reward patient cellaring. Cellar with the confidence of screwcap. Food: Match with chicken or vegetable pasta dishes.

A wine to save - short term. Old vines are often behind the most long-lived wines, and this Chardonnay is made from 29-year old ungrafted vines that number some of the oldest in the Waipara region. I recently tasted the 2005 Premo [Old Vine] Chardonnay, which was drinking well and still available in tiny quantities from the winery. The 2012 is from a lighter vintage, but would still warrant medium-term cellaring with its subtle white peach fruit and punchy citrus infused with hints of peppery spice and of smoke wrapped around a minerality and gently savoury core. Harvested from mature vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak casks, the 2012 vintage (3.5*) is full-bodied, with creamy notes, lively acidity, and moderately ripe, citrusy, appley flavours, showing good complexity. Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2015.
